ABOUT US

Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art. However, at Swinburne, we place greater focus on Taekwondo as a modern martial sport. Through careful guidance from our qualified 5th Dan instructor (almost 30 years experience), members will develop skills in the art of kicking, self-defence and competition patterns & sparring. Practising Taekwondo will improve your overall fitness - strength, coordination, flexibility, speed and endurance. It is also a great way to meet new people and have a bit of fun while doing it!

TRAINING INFORMATION

• Tuesday (6:30pm - 8:30pm) – techniques & sparring – on campus. This class focuses on developing taekwondo techniques (kicks, strikes, stances, etc.) and the associated skills for taekwondo sparring.

• Thursday (6:30pm - 8:30pm) – self-defence & fitness – on campus. This class is split into two 1-hour segments. In the 1st hour, members will learn and develop skills & techniques to handle various self-defence situations. In the 2nd hour, the focus shifts to improving overall fitness. It will run in a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) format, mixing basic taekwondo techniques with bodyweight exercises. Members can participate in one or both segments as they please. Members will also learn and practise various forms/patterns with the aim towards grading and/or competition performance. Members are also able to receive advice and guidance after Tuesday & Thursday classes.

VENUE

Tuesday and Thursday classes are held on campus in Room GS201, Level 2, The George Swinburne (GS) Building. Change rooms and showers are available in the toilets on the same floor and also in the adjoining SR Building.

Classes operate right up to the end of November 2024. Even during school breaks. No classes on public holidays.

Club Events

Throughout the year, several Club Events will be organised in addition to the three weekly classes. These include self-defence workshops, games/movie nights, training camps, tournaments, etc. Some events are open to the greater Swinburne community for participation (eg. Self-defence workshop). And, some are free of charge, while others incur a fee.

MISSION

The Club's mission is to share the joy and beauty of Taekwondo with the wider Swinburne community. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for everyone to learn this dynamic martial art (at a very low cost) and create a memorable university experience. Swinburne Tae Kwon Do Club
